Treinbesturingssoftware maakt het mogelijk een digitale modelspoorbaan aan te sturen. Het kan verschillen van alleen als wisseltableau tot volledig automatisch bedrijf. Zie hiervoor: Besturingsystemen:Digitaal. Toch zijn er een aantal "analoge" systemen die ook bestuurd kunnen worden door treinbesturingssoftware zoals het systeem van HCCM of het Dinamo systeem

Software pakketten

Tussen de verschillende softwarepakketten zit verschil in de mogelijkheden maar de manier van ondersteuning. Sommige bieden geen directe ondersteuning maar alleen via fora. Ook verschilt de prijs van niets tot een paar honderd euro. Of je dat er voor over hebt is een beslissing die je zelf moet nemen aan de hand van de mogelijkheden van het programma en je wensen bij het gebruik.
